Since Halloween was only a few weeks ago (we know, we miss it already, too), you might be out of ideas when it comes to expressing your festive spirit for the holiday season.

Whether you plan to go to a holiday work party and need to purchase a nice dress or shirt and tie, or you’re attending an ugly sweater party, it’s important to adhere to any costume requirements -- and there are just as many themed parties this time of year as toward the end of October.

Below, we go over a few holiday costume ideas that will have you in the holiday spirit in no time. With a little effort, you can even brighten up someone else’s holiday simply by dressing up.

Utilizing What You Already Have

If you’re thinking of breaking out your Wonder Woman Costume, the holiday season might not necessarily be the right time. However, if you put a holiday twist on the costume and put some festive touches on it, you’ll remain in the clear.

You could even break out your Harley Quinn costume or your Harry Potter costume in lieu of purchasing a brand-new Santa costume. Utilizing what you already have costume-wise will help you save a little cash while also getting the most use out of purchases you’ve made in the past.

Cast of Holiday Characters

You don’t necessarily have to stick with Christmas-themed costumes, unless you plan on going to one of the many themed Christmas parties during this time of year. You could even choose to dress as one of your favorite characters from one of your favorite holiday movies -- like Clark Griswald from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, or even Kevin McCallister from Home Alone.

A little bit of thinking outside the box goes a long way during the Halloween seasons and the same goes true for the holiday season. Putting a creative twist on any old costume will win a ton of brownie points when it comes time to award the best holiday costume.

More Traditional Avenues

Sure, you can also choose some of the more traditional holiday costumes, such as an elf costume, a snowman costume, or a Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer costume. Buddy the Elf is a popular costume during Halloween season and that’s a Christmas movie, folks, so it’s totally appropriate to dress as a famous elf or even a naughty Santa Claus during the holiday season.

Saving money during this time of year is essential for spreading the maximum amount of holiday cheer. You can check out secondhand stores to find some holiday-friendly costume items and take your search online -- sites like eBay should have some decent deals on gently used items. What you don’t want to do is end up paying retail price for an expensive Santa costume that you’re only going to end up using once a year. Remember, although some Halloween costumes are acceptable costumes to wear during the holiday season, there aren’t many holiday-themed costumes that are going to get you many nods of respect or appreciation during Halloween season.

Since you probably would rather spend your hard-earned money on the perfect gift for that special someone, it’s best to avoid spending extravagant amounts of money on a holiday costume. You can ask a friend to borrow an item that will help complete your costume instead of purchasing it. If you do have to purchase a holiday-themed costume, you have the option of returning it down the road if you haven’t damaged the item or compromised it in any way -- just save your proof of purchase!

Get Creative

You can utilize an old moving box, some ninety-nine-cent wrapping paper, and a cheap bow and turn yourself into a present for whatever themed-party you’re going to. Just make sure that you pack a pair of red or green tights to keep you warm in the frigid air.

If you don’t hear of any holiday-themed parties going on this year that you can dress up for, maybe it’s time to throw your own.
